North and Central America
Until now we have been seeing essentially flat images. This is the first picture in which there is any depth. The edges of the Earth are 6400 km behind California in the center of the picture. This is important for the next several jumps because we can talk about a local volume of space. For the next several jumps, I have not included the background stars in the images. Think of each image as a cube of space of a particular size. The image displays only those objects within the immediate volume of space, without any background objects. I hope to convey a sense of the emptiness of our part of the galaxy.
